Getting Started with Latin

This course is for learners with no previous knowledge of the language that want to start from the very beginning. Lessons will cover simple but key aspects of the language, its grammar and life in the Roman Empire. Learning takes place in English with a focus to learn and undestrand patters in Latin. Sessions are designed to encourage a collaborative approach in which active practice and communication are vital.

Latin was not only the language of the ancient Romans, but has continued to be used down the centuries and has given us many English words and phrases. This short course offers a chance to get a first taste of learning the language. We'll work through the opening sections of the Cambridge Latin Course, which illustrate some of the language's basic principles and introduce the world of a family living in Pompeii.

There will be no exams or qualifications. Therefore, the level of this course is not comparable to qualification courses with other providers. Unlike modern languages, there is no speaking and listening element (which may be reassuring!) and our work in classes will focus mainly on developing skills needed to read short passages. You will also have a chance to practise reading and writing skills as part of regular homework tasks. This gives the tutor an opportunity to identify group weaknesses and to provide you with personalised feedback to help you improve.
