The Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) is a nationally recognised qualification that meets the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements for individuals responsible for the care of children in their workplace or voluntary roles. This is a blended course, meaning you will complete the first part (knowledge) through self-directed e-learning and then attend a face-to-face training session for practical skills and assessment.

This course provides essential knowledge and practical skills to ensure you are well-prepared to act in emergency situations involving infants and children. The topics covered include: • The role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider. • How to carry out an emergency assessment. • Providing first aid to an infant or child who is unresponsive. • Managing choking incidents in infants and children. • Dealing with bleeding, shock, and other minor injuries or ailments. • Practical techniques such as administering CPR • Placing a casualty in the recovery position.

This course is delivered using a mixed delivery method: Self-Directed E-Learning: The first part of the course consists of online learning that you can complete at your own pace. This is expected to take approximately one day to finish. You must complete this element (with online verification) at least 48 hours before attending the face-to-face training. Face-to-Face Practical Training: The second part is a full day of classroom-based practical skills and assessments. You will work with a qualified instructor and a class group to practise and refine your skills. Your assessments will be marked on the day, and you will be informed before leaving whether you have successfully achieved the qualification.

During the assessment for this qualification, you will need to demonstrate CPR and recovery position techniques for a minimum of 2 minutes each. You must be physically able to independently get down to floor level and remain there for the duration of the actvity in order to achieve accreditation. You should also have a minimum level of English skills equivalent to Level 1 or GCSE to complete the self-directed e-learning and the multiple-choice assessment at the end of the practical training. If you have dyslexia or another learning difficulty that could impact your ability to complete the self-directed study, please let us know at the time of enrolment so that appropriate support can be arranged. Additionally, you will need access to a reliable internet-connected device (smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.) and a WiFi connection to complete the e-learning component. Once you are enrolled, we will send you a link to access the online materials.

This qualification meets the requirements for Paediatric First Aid as outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guidelines. It is valid for three years, after which you will need to retake the course to maintain your certification. Annual knowledge refreshers are also recommended to keep your skills up to date. While this course alone will not directly qualify you to work with children, it is an essential requirement for most roles involving childcare. Whether you are working in a professional setting or regularly caring for children at home, this qualification provides vital knowledge and skills to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
